Glow-worm to the rescue in one of the coldest winters on record

, 01.04.2011

Glow-worm reacted quickly after Newport gas engineer Mark Hall from MPH Gas Ltd visited a disabled man to mend his broken boiler and found him sleeping in the kitchen for warmth. The man, in his fifties, had been forced to sleep on a sofa next to the Aga in his kitchen; the only room warm enough in the house during one of the coldest winters on record.

Despite being eligible for a grant of £3,500 from the Government’s Warm Front scheme to replace his antiquated boiler, the homeowner, who was on Disability Living Allowance, faced up to a six month delay for a new installation as part of the scheme.

Mr Hall from MPH Gas Limited, took it upon himself to help the homeowner with the delay, however was unable to reach an agreement with Warm Front, when he offered to install a new boiler himself as part of the scheme. Following the set backs, Mr Hall decided to take steps to ensure the man got a reliable heating system up and working immediately by approaching Glow-worm for help.

Glow-worm reacted quickly to Mr Hall’s request, recognising the urgency of the man’s plight, and supplied a brand new Ultracom2 30 cxi boiler and flue absolutely free which Mr. Hall has now also installed free of charge.

"It is so sad that this gentleman had to sleep in his kitchen for warmth, especially over Christmas when the situation could have been easily resolved. I was very pleased that Glow-worm were willing to help, and glad that we could eventually help the homeowner through the coldest months of the year.”
