How much does a boiler service cost in 2022?

In 2022, an average boiler service can cost up to £120.

The cost of an annual boiler service in the UK depends on things like your location, the type of appliance, your choice of heating engineer, and whether you have a boiler cover plan (more on these factors below).

A Glow-worm annual boiler service starts from £99 – find an installer near you to have your boiler checked by an expert independent heating engineer, approved by the manufacturers.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

Factors that affect boiler service costs

Where you live in the UK can have a big impact on the price you pay for a boiler service. As with most things, annual boiler service costs are normally higher if you’re based in London. On the other hand, prices are generally lower in the North, and you’ll often find that servicing is cheaper outside of big cities.

The cost of a boiler service will also depend on whether you choose a nationwide company or a local independent heating engineer to carry out the work. Typically, large firms will charge more for a service than individual boiler specialists, although you have the security of knowing that the work is being carried out by a vetted employee from a reputable business.

Glow-worm Club Energy offers the best of both worlds. It’s a network of independent, Gas Safe-registered heating engineers that they have been fully trained in the best practices for working in your home safely. You’re still keeping costs down by using a local contractor, but can rest assured that you’ll receive a safe and thorough boiler service.

There are two options when it comes to having your boiler serviced: you can either choose to book a one-off service or subscribe to a boiler cover plan, which will provide a service each year in addition to the cost of parts and labour should your boiler need repairing at any stage.

A one-off annual boiler service will usually set you back less than a year’s boiler cover. That said, it may still work out cheaper overall to pay for the cover, particularly in the event that you experience a boiler breakdown. Once your boiler is out of its guarantee period, you’ll have to pay for a one-off boiler repair to fix any problems if you don’t have boiler cover.

The price of having your gas boiler serviced can also vary depending on whether you have a combi, system, or heat-only boiler. In some cases, a combi boiler service may be cheaper than the other types because all of the components are inside the same unit (read on to learn more about this).

An older gas boiler could require more thorough servicing than a modern model, adding to the cost. This is particularly likely to be the case if your boiler is more than 10-15 years old. With older boilers, the likelihood that repairs will be required also increases.

Service costs for different boiler types

Your location in the UK and your choice of heating engineer are the biggest deciding factors for the cost of a boiler service. That said, the type of gas boiler you have can also play a part in determining the price. Here, we’ve outlined the typical service costs for different boiler types.

Combi boiler service costs

A combi boiler service will often cost between £80 and £110.

Servicing a combination boiler can be slightly cheaper than the other types. This is because all of the parts are housed within one unit with a combi boiler, so it may take less time for the heating engineer to inspect everything thoroughly.

System boiler service costs

A system boiler service tends to be around £90 to £120.

This type of boiler requires a separate hot water storage cylinder, so the boiler service should include a visual inspection of the tank. As this is usually kept in a different part of the home to the boiler itself, the cylinder inspection may add slightly to the time and cost involved by comparison to a combi service.

Heat-only boiler service costs

A heat-only boiler service will usually be priced at around £90 to £120.

Like system boilers, these appliances have a separate hot water storage cylinder that requires inspection (so a service may cost a little more than a combi boiler service).

Although heat-only boilers also use a feed and expansion tank in the loft, this isn’t normally investigated during a boiler service. If you suspect that there is an issue with your feed and expansion tank – for example, if water leaks down from the loft – contact a boiler specialist to arrange an inspection and repair.

How often should I have my boiler serviced?

You should have your boiler serviced at least once a year.

An annual boiler service is vital for safety purposes. A malfunctioning boiler can result in the leakage of carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can be fatal to humans. Regular check-ups will help to ensure that this doesn’t happen, keeping you safe in your home.

If your appliance is still in its manufacturer guarantee period, an annual boiler service will also ensure that this guarantee is extended (failing to have your boiler serviced can invalidate your guarantee). What’s more, having your boiler checked extends its lifespan and means that it’s less likely to break down when you most need it.

What can I expect from a boiler service?

A boiler service is essentially a set of checks to make sure that your appliance is working correctly and safely. This will include things like inspecting for gas leaks, assessing the pilot light (if you have an older boiler), and testing parts such as the flue.

Boiler service vs boiler repair

It’s important to note that a boiler service is different from a boiler repair – a service should be carried out once a year to check for any issues, whereas a repair will only need to be carried out in the event that you experience problems with your boiler.
